Inner Guidance vs. Intuition: Knowing the Difference

Often used interchangeably with intuition, inner guidance, and intuition serve unique purposes in our decision-making processes in life. Inner guidance is the voice of our more wise sense of self, informed by life experiences and personal growth. It offers wisdom and understanding, acting as an internal guidance system.

Intuition, on the flip side, is an instinctual, spontaneous sense of clarity, knowing, or insight that arises from within, not permanently anchored in or based on past activity or experiences. Intuition is non-emotional, it just is, a take it or leave it insight. To clarify, some forms of intuition come with a ‘feeling based insight’, these feelings are data, and not to be attached to an emotional reaction of ‘good or bad’, ‘like or don’t like’, which are typically byproducts of the mind’s judgment of a feeling (feelings are neutral by nature). 

Both, inner guidance and intuition, play critical roles in navigating life’s challenges and fostering positive growth and expansion. 

Cultivating Awareness

The journey to develop and awaken our inner guidance and intuition begins with enhancing our awareness. This means tuning into our body, emotions, and thoughts, often through practices like mindfulness meditation and guided meditations. Such practices help us focus on our breath and observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment, aiding in the distinction between intuition and mere thoughts or emotions.

When we deepen our inner awareness and become present with our intuition, then we begin to discover the unique and nuanced ways our intuition is communicating directly with and through our being. The most common forms of receiving our intuition - or opening to our intuitive senses - often mirrors our physical senses of seeing (clairvoyance), hearing (clairaudience), feeling (clairsentience), and then "knowing" (claircognizance). Additionally, less commonly utilized intuitive senses include our taste intuition (clairgustance), and touch intuition, referred to as psychometry. These intuitive parallels to our five+ primary physical senses, offer a roadmap to the many ways you can connect and develop your intuitive perception. Additional layers of intuitive insights can continue to develop for you over time, however these are the most commonly experienced and first developed senses that come online when we begin tuning inward and listening to our intuitive guidance.

Trusting Your Inner Voice

In today’s logic-driven society, trusting your inner voice can seem like a daunting task. Our inner voice often whispers truths that logic alone cannot grasp, guiding us through intuition and gut feelings. To cultivate this trust, it’s essential to begin with small, everyday decisions. Pay attention to their outcomes and notice how often your inner voice leads you in the right direction.

Dreams provide a direct pathway from the thinking mind to our subconscious mind, offering valuable insights. Maintaining a dream journal and reflecting on our dreams can reveal guiding symbols or messages, aiding in the development of our inner guidance system.

What we consume physically can significantly impact our spiritual connections. A diet rich in whole foods, healthy fats, and proper hydration is essential to support brain function and emotional balance and enhance the quality of those downstream functions in the body. These are vital components for tapping into our intuition.
