Emotional Balance: The Iceberg of Our Inner World

In the realm of emotional wellbeing, physical health, and holistic healing, the profound nature and intricate landscape of our emotions serve as an example of an allegory where the majority of the matter remains hidden beneath the surface.

My analogy (the iceberg) invites us to explore the depths of our emotional world, revealing a multifaceted terrain that extends far beyond what is readily visible. What most people perceive (the tip of the iceberg) encompasses aspects of our visible emotional and physical reactions, like facial expressions and behaviors. By nature, these are the facets and aspects of each person and ourselves that we and others can easily discern. However, it is crucial to acknowledge and recognize that these visible aspects represent only a fraction of the emotional landscape that lies beneath the surface for each person.

Beyond our superficial layer exists a complex world of fluctuating emotions, automatic responses, and deeply ingrained subconscious beliefs that profoundly influence our experiences and wellbeing. By embarking on a transformative journey to delve deeper into this emotional iceberg and by shining the illuminating light of awareness on hidden layers, like suffering, we can facilitate emotional wellbeing, soothe our body, and calm our nervous system. The main ambition behind doing so is to create less anxiety and depression and regain control over our lives and personal agency for a more fulfilling life.

The Visible Tip: Maintain Emotional Balance

At the surface of our emotional balance iceberg, we encounter our emotional and physical reactions and behaviors, which are readily observable by both ourselves and those around us. This layer of emotional balance encompasses all the things we feel. For instance, smiling shows we are happy at the moment, and frowning can show we're confused or even angry. Our facial expressions encompass all the little things that express our actions and feelings, influencing how we present ourselves to each person in the world.

Our persona is the visible manifestation of our inner emotional landscape. While it is helpful and provides valuable and practical insights into our feelings, it represents only the surface layer of most people's emotional experiences — just a fraction of how the person is feeling.

Below the Surface: Emotional Wellbeing

Below the tip of the iceberg is the surface of feeling; how our emotions ebb and flow like tides in response to the ever-changing rhythms of life. This layer of feeling represents the internal feelings of happiness, joy, sadness, anger, fear, and more that imbue our daily experiences. While these emotions may not always be visible to external observers, they are keenly felt and acknowledged by us. These emotions form the undercurrents that guide our perceptions and interactions with the world.

Our mood and emotional fluctuations are dynamic and responsive in nature, adapting to the circumstances, stressful situations, and life events that create and shape moments in our lives. They are the currents of our emotional landscape and nature, and understanding them requires a deeper dive beneath the surface of emotion.

Deeper Down: The Nervous System's Responses

Further below, in the realm of emotional regulation of our nervous system, lies the physiological response to our distressing emotions. This is where our body reacts automatically to emotional stimuli. Our heart rate may quicken, blood pressure might rise, or sweat may begin. These are automatic reactions that our body generates as it responds to the emotional cues it receives. These automatic responses are integral to our emotional experiences and play a significant role in distressing emotions and shaping our reactions.

Our nervous system's responses to emotions of anger, anxiety, fear, and stress are like the bridge between our inner emotional world and the rest of our external reality. They are the physical manifestations of our emotional states and provide a tangible link between our conscious and subconscious reactions to stressful situations that can make us feel overwhelmed and angry.

The Deepest Layer: The Subconscious

At the deepest level of the emotional iceberg, we confront our emotional imbalance in the vast and often uncharted territory of our subconscious. This profound realm houses our deeply ingrained beliefs, childhood programming, past life experiences, positive emotions, negative emotions, and traumas. It serves as a reservoir for our life experiences and the meanings we have assigned to them. In this deep recess of our psyche, the roots of our emotional responses, like difficult situations and emotional imbalances, are firmly embedded, influencing our reactions to difficult situations and emotional imbalance without our conscious awareness.

Our subconscious beliefs and experiences shape the way we perceive the world and interpret our emotions. They are an example of the hidden influencers that can create and steer our lives in ways we may not fully recognize or comprehend.

Shining Sunlight on Self-Awareness

When an experience triggers our subconscious, it propels our reactions and emotions to the surface, bringing the matter into our conscious awareness. At this juncture, the symbolic 'sun' of our conscious awareness can play a pivotal role. For example, by shining the positive light of consciousness on our experiences of suffering, we bring clarity, calm, and balance to all aspects we are feeling and undergoing, dispelling emotional patterns that may have been operating in the shadows.

This newfound awareness is profoundly helpful and empowering; it gives us the opportunity to take ownership of our emotions through feelings and patterns. As the radiant light of our awareness permeates these more profound layers of negative emotion, we begin to discern the origins of our emotional responses by programming and beliefs that have been silently guiding our reactions from negative emotions to positive emotions.

Simply put, awareness is the key to unraveling the complexities of our emotional landscape and feelings to enhance our lives. It is the tool that empowers us to understand, accept, acknowledge, navigate, and manage our emotions more consciously. So, it's time to override the difficult situation you may be facing with positive feelings.

Reclaiming Our Power

Through the exploration of these emotional depths, we reclaim control of our energy, mood, and focus. We draw valuable insights from our experiences through being aware of subconscious reactions, marking the reclamation of our power and authority to maintain emotional balance and equilibrium.

Reclaiming our emotional balance, control, and power is an ongoing process of self-discovery and growth. It involves cultivating self-compassion, resilience, and the ability to navigate and maintain the complexities of our emotional world consciously.
